Unlike most AI marking tools, Marking.ai can mark assessments that have multiple questions. Our platform effectively marks both exam style and essay style questions, but is optimised to mark exam-style questions found in subjects that typically require lengthy, written answers. In September 2025, we also launched the functionality for the AI to read diagrams, graphs and images that get uploaded by the student. 

Yes! Our AI marker is not just a specialist at marking, but for each question, provides you with in-depth, personalised and targeted feedback that you can share with your students. In addition, you will receive a breakdown of where the student scored marks and how they can improve. 

Absolutely. We prioritize security and privacy by employing end-to-end encryption and adhering to strict data protection standards. No data is shared with third parties without explicit consent.

Marking.ai is optimised for subjects where assessments require lengthier, written answers by students. These are typically language based subjects and humanities.

Yes, it can! We process each answer individually and analyse it thoroughly. We are able to process equations, and in September 2025, we optimised the platform to process diagrams and graphs effectively.

During the use of Marking.ai, we only capture the student name so you can report effectively on student performance. We are both GDPR and POPIA compliant - please visit our data protection page to find out more.

Currently, teachers can share feedback pages with students, but students do not have their own logins. Teachers upload submissions on the students' behalf, or share a link for students to upload their submission. When students upload their submission, the mark is first shared on the teacher's account and the teacher is always in full control before they share with the student. 

To create an account, visit the Sign up page from Marking.ai’s website and provide accurate information. The service is intended for educators and students and must be used in compliance with relevant laws and policies. During registration you will be asked to supply your name, contact details and a password. You’re responsible for keeping your credentials confidential and for all activity on your account. Marking.ai offers a limited free trial to allow new users to test the platform before subscribing (see pricing page).

Marking.ai operates on a monthly subscription model. Users can add a debit or credit card to their account to pay subscription fees. The company may change its prices with notice. Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time, but cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period and the company does not offer refunds.

The platform is designed for educators to create, upload and manage assessments. Marking.ai’s interface allows teachers to set up assessments and questions easily, upload answer scripts for each student and mark either individual questions or entire classes. Educators can also edit assessments, adjust marking rubrics and change feedback before releasing results—teachers always have the final say

Yes. Marking.ai’s AI models provide suggested grades and detailed feedback, but educators must review and edit these suggestions before releasing them to students. The platform emphasises teacher control—users can modify marks and feedback to ensure they reflect their professional judgment

In multi‑question assessments, Marking.ai uses natural‑language processing to associate each student answer with the correct question. This ensures that marks are applied to the appropriate sections even when answers are submitted in a single document. The AI analyses the structure of uploaded scripts and segments them so that each response is evaluated against the corresponding mark scheme.

Educators can add students when setting up a class or assessment. The platform lets teachers create a student list and upload each student’s submission. Submissions may be PDFs or scanned handwritten scripts; Marking.ai’s handwriting recognition allows teachers to upload handwritten work and have it marked instantly. For each student you can view past assessments, track progress and download marked scripts as a PDF or spreadsheet.

When creating an assessment, the platform prompts you to upload the assessment document (e.g., the question paper). After students complete the assessment, you can upload their submissions individually or in bulk. Marking.ai supports both typed and handwritten scripts, and its handwriting support means teachers can scan or photograph answer sheets and still receive accurate AI marking. 

After uploading the assessment and student submissions, choose the relevant mark scheme or rubric and start the marking process. The AI analyses each response, provides suggested grades and detailed feedback, and highlights where marks were earned or lost. Teachers review and edit the results before finalising them.

Once marking is complete, teachers can view marked assessments, see an overview of marks awarded for each question and adjust them if necessary. Marking.ai allows educators to download marked assessments and feedback summaries as PDF or spreadsheet files so they can share results with students or store them for records.

Marking.ai’s Insights feature aggregates results across a class or school and displays trends in student performance. Teachers can see average scores per question, identify common misconceptions and detect areas where students are excelling or struggling. These analytics help educators plan targeted interventions. Access Insights from the dashboard once your class’s assessments have been marked.

The platform lets educators design custom feedback templates or rubrics. Teachers can specify the type of feedback they want to provide (e.g., strengths, areas for improvement and next steps) and adjust the tone or structure. Customised rubrics ensure that AI‑generated feedback aligns with the subject’s learning objectives and your school’s marking policies

The remark feature allows educators to re‑evaluate a student’s script after initial marking—for example if new information becomes available or if a student appeals a grade. Teachers can submit a remark request, and the AI will reprocess the answer with the updated context or rubric. The teacher can then review the new suggestion and adjust marks accordingly.

Marking.ai’s Teacher’s Assistant is an AI‑powered helper that can generate rubrics, suggest prompts or even draft personalised reports. It acts as a co‑pilot by handling repetitive tasks, letting educators focus on lesson planning and student interaction. According to Marking.ai’s blog, AI frees up time by automating grading and feedback, allowing teachers to reclaim hours and focus on high‑impact tasks.

A submission‑progress dashboard shows the status of each student’s script (e.g., uploaded, in marking, marked). Teachers can monitor how much of the class has been marked and identify any missing submissions. Real‑time tracking helps educators manage deadlines and ensures no student’s work is overlooked.

Teachers can generate a unique submission link for each assessment and share it with students via email or messaging platforms. When students click the link, they’re prompted to upload their completed script. Once submitted, the script appears in the teacher’s dashboard for marking. Sharing links simplifies the submission process and ensures all responses are collected in one place.

Marking.ai is mobile‑friendly. To upload via a smartphone, open the submission link in your device’s browser, tap the upload button and select a photo or PDF of the student’s work. The platform’s handwriting recognition supports scanned images and photographs of handwritten script. Make sure the photo is clear and well‑lit for best results.

Marking.ai welcomes suggestions. Educators can request new features or enhancements through the Contact Us page or by emailing connect@marking.ai. Provide details about the feature you’d like to see and how it would improve your workflow.

Alternatively, you can submit the feedback form directly from within the Marking.ai app. 

You can update your profile information, change your password, manage billing details and adjust notification preferences in the Account Settings section. Maintaining accurate information is important because you are responsible for all activities on your account. 

Yes. Marking.ai is POPIA‑compliant and has a registered Information Officer to ensure student data is protected. The company does not share any student or user data with third parties, does not use individual student data to train its models and keeps each school’s data separate. Administrators, educators, parents and students can access assessment data at any time, and schools may request a full export of their data

Off‑the‑shelf AI chat tools can generate irrelevant or off‑topic responses. Marking.ai keeps the AI strictly focused on the assessment context so feedback and marks are based only on the information provided. Educators always have the final say and can edit marks and feedback. The platform also designs feedback to guide students without giving away the answer

Not yet. Marking.ai acknowledges that AI‑detection tools are still unreliable. The company’s focus is on delivering an optimal marking and feedback experience. If you are concerned about students using AI to generate answers, Marking.ai can recommend best practices and third‑party tools for plagiarism detection

Marking.ai doesn’t currently include an AI‑detection module. If you suspect a student has used generative AI or plagiarised content, the Marking.ai team can advise on best practices and suggest external AI‑ or plagiarism‑detection tools.
